Dr. Steven Poon, M.D., C.A.Q.S.M. is a primary care and non-operative sports medicine specialist. He specializes in the whole care of the active individual from those who are new to exercise through high level collegiate, professional, and Olympic caliber athletes. He is an expert in the diagnosis, management, and non-operative treatment of acute or chronic injuries of the musculoskeletal system.
Dr. Poon graduated cum laude from Tufts University Medford campus with a B.S. in Chemistry before pursuing his medical degree also at Tufts University in Boston, MA. He then completed his residency in Family Medicine at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. While there, he advised medical students interested in Family Medicine and was awarded the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Resident Teacher Award. He also provided sports medicine coverage for Winston-Salem State University Athletics, Winston-Salem Dash High-A Minor League Professional Baseball team, and performing arts coverage at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Dr. Poon then completed a Fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at the University of Washington where he provided care for the Huskies Athletic Department. He is currently dual board certified in Family Medicine and Sports Medicine.
Prior to joining Mayo Clinic Arizona, Dr. Poon was team physician for Arizona State University Athletics for 5 years. Additionally, he served as Tournament Physician for USA Wrestling's World Team Trials Challenge Tournament in 2018 and remains active in the USA Wrestling medical coverage pool. He continues his interests in academics with continued ventures in education, research, and published book chapters. Dr. Poon also volunteers time serving with the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, the pre-eminent primary care sports medicine society, in various committee leadership roles.Prevention of sudden cardiac arrest in athlete
